Protect Your Comfort and Health by Monitoring Indoor Air Quality

by | Mar 10, 2015 | Heating and Cooling

Indoor Air Quality is one of the most important factors for good health and comfort for anyone who spends a significant amount of time in any building. When the air quality is poor, people will often suffer from respiratory distress and illnesses. It can encourage headaches, and even spread the germs that cause the stomach flu. In some cases, it could be destructive to the building itself.

Good air quality is based on several conditions. There has to be an adequate heating and cooling system that will keep the air temperature at a comfortable level. Extreme changes in temperatures can lead to condensation, an issue that will eventually lead to hazardous mold. The building should also have enough circulation and ventilation that the air is continuously freshened.

The air will also need to be filtered. This is important because filtering will remove allergens, bacteria and viruses from the air. No system can remove 100 percent of everything, but between filtering and general cleaning, the numbers of bacteria and other concerns will stay low enough to make the environment healthy for everyone.

Finally, there is the moisture level to consider. For the highest level of comfort, the air should not be too dry. When the air is dry, people will often experience dry skin, cracked lips, and nosebleeds. There may also be an increase in static electricity and, though it is not dangerous, it can certainly become frustrating and uncomfortable.

When the air is too moist, it can lead to mold and mildew growth in the building. This can be a dangerous health issue and cause wood rot if not treated. High humidity will also irritate allergies and can be a concern for those with asthma because humid air is the perfect environment for dust mites to thrive and overpopulate.

The best way to be certain the Indoor Air Quality of your home or business is as good as it can be is to call your HVAC company for a review. If the air is not as safe as it could be, they can help you to choose the equipment to install or other adjustments you can make to improve the air immediately.
